Marv (Sin City)
I personally feel that it’s almost a right of passage to draw at least ONE character from Sin City. The movie is definitely a classic in my opinion and one of my favorites sticking to the noir shots and mild violent coloring. I really enjoyed the movie lol.
I took the opportunity to draw this based on grittiness and bandages. I definitely have a thing for bandages at this moment and I’m going to run with it for most of these portraits. Anyway, sketching this out was difficult as used a Pinterest reference that included direct lighting on bright skin and I had to take into account the hand proportions. I love challenging myself when I draw so I felt I did well with the sketch.
Moving on to washing and coloring since I don’t have a CLUE what Marv’s actual skin tone would be I based it off Mickey Rourke a bit and tried my best. I gave him sandy skin with a bit of grit and ask to take in effect for his constant fighting. Needing to be constantly bandages because you LIKE bleeding has a different tone to it altogether.
Along with the sand color skin, I added purple and pink in different key areas. Purple around the shading areas to give the skin a dry tone as if he’s appearing out of the shadows and pink to signify bruised areas.
Once I get the tones for the skin down the rest was a piece of cake. Kept using dark brown, purple and white mixed together for the hair and more detailing of wrinkles. Violet Purple sky to bring out the direct light and I used a white gel pen for the rain.
I want to say this piece took between 5-6 hours to complete from sketch to seal.
