I Get No Kicks from Champagne
A couple years ago I botched a commission request, depression and anxiety got the best of me so I never completed what my friend Durrell had asked of me.
Fast forward to a couple of months ago he surprises me with this kick ass mash up request. To blend MF Doom and Captain Murphy (Flylo Whattup?!) Now for those who don’t know, I love MF Doom. I had every Special Herbs in my collection and I loved finding the original samples he’d use so that I could show off. So to be asked to create a piece for one of my musical heroes.. absolutely.
Then you have Flying Lotus’ alter Ego in Captain Murphy. Jeez, I know I’m not alone - please tell me by the end of Duality you thought that you could become a cult leader.
What I loved most about this piece is the medium.
I based the piece a bright yellow ink that would help set the glowing tone I wanted for the piece. I wanted this to really feel like he’s in your mind and there’s nothing you can do. Hence the chaos background and obscure flying debris.
The maroon I decided to go with to help bring out the darker skin tones. I find that using these earthy yet bright colors as a base as well as clothing really helps the brown pop.
The best part about this piece was the completion. I did myself proud and a justice on this one. And homie sent me over season 1 & 2 of The Boondocks!
